TWO AVON STUDENTS ELECTED TO
BOARD OF “AVON DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS”
AVON, CONN., April 24, 2012 — Two Avon teenagers have been elected to the Board of Directors of “Avon Dollars for Scholars”. Jason M. Leaning (left) and Stephanie E. Sawicki (right), both Juniors at Avon High School, are the nonprofit organization’s first student representatives. Both of the students are active in leadership, school, and community activities and want to pursue careers in medicine. Avon Dollars for Scholars Board members note that adding high school students to its Board enhances their efforts to involve Avon residents and businesses as they raise community awareness and scholarship funds to help graduating seniors who need assistance in paying for college.
Contributions of any size are accepted year-round by Avon Dollars for Scholars. A donation of $300 or more entitles the donor to have a scholarship presented in the name of his or her choice – a perfect way to remember deceased loved ones or friends. All donations may be sent to:

AVON GIRLS’ “MOTHER-DAUGHTER TEA PARTY” RAISES FUNDS
FOR “AVON DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS”
AVON, CONN., April 16, 2012 – Two Avon sixth graders are continuing their yearly tradition of hosting a fundraiser to help local high school seniors who need assistance in paying for college. Emma Feeley and Rachel Spivak recently organized their fifth annual “Mother-Daughter Tea Party” to benefit Avon Dollars for Scholars. The young ladies and their mothers asked their 75 guests to donate money for a scholarship fund that will help an Avon high school graduate, in lieu of bringing gifts to the party.
The $1,315 raised at the girls’ 2012 “Mother-Daughter Tea Party” was directed to “The Rachel and Emma Foundation Scholarship Fund” of Avon Dollars for Scholars. The money will be presented to a local graduating senior at a school awards night and graduation ceremony later this Spring.
“Over the past five years, Emma and Rachel have raised close to $5,000 by hosting these special fundraising parties,” explains John C. Carmon, President of Avon Dollars for Scholars. “They are an inspiration to all of the volunteers who support ‘Avon Dollars for Scholars’ and are models for others by showing that anyone can step forward to help.”
To be eligible to apply for funds from Avon Dollars for Scholars, students must be residents of Avon, regardless of which high school they attend: public; private; magnet; parochial; or technical school. Most of the scholarships awarded are based upon financial need and merit, but some are given to students who display exceptional levels of community service and academic achievement.
