A.V.O.N. (AVON VOLUNTEERS ON NEWNESS) CLUB SCHOLARSHIP:
The A.V.O.N. Club is a student volunteer organization that welcomes new students to Avon High School and performs various community services, including raising funds for Dollars for Scholars. The scholarship is awarded to a student who has demonstrated a commitment to volunteering time and talent to the school and community.
AVON BOYS TRAVEL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP:
The Avon Boys Travel Basketball Association Award is awarded to a young man who had played at least one year with the ABTBA program. The individual will be chosen based upon high ethical standards, displaying hard work in not only athletic efforts but also in his scholastic life, and be a proven positive contributor with an unwavering devotion to teamwork and the success of TEAM over individualism.
AVON-CANTON ROTARY CLUB SCHOLARSHIP:
Members of the local Rotary Club started the Avon Dollars for Scholars Chapter in 1978. Yearly, the Rotarians fund scholarships for both college and post-high school technical or vocational training schools. Rotary’s motto is “service above self”.
AVON EDUCATION FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP:
This scholarship is given in honor of Sue Bertolini as founder of the Avon Education Foundation. It is awarded to a graduating senior who will be pursuing a career in education and has shown a commitment to serving the community.
AVON GIRL SCOUTS SCHOLARSHIP:
The Avon Girl Scouts Scholarship recognizes a current or former Girl Scout based on her leadership skills and service to the community.
AVON JUNIOR WOMEN’S CLUB SCHOLARSHIP:
This scholarship is awarded to a female student who has performed exceptional community service.
AVON LIONS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP:
Since 1951, the men and women of the Avon Lions Club have served the community, country and world in the challenge of vision related needs, disaster relief and improvement of quality of life. The recipient of this scholarship has demonstrated commitment to these needs through actions in providing service to the community.
AVON ROBOTICS SCHOLARSHIP:
This award is created to recognize an Avon resident who has devoted his or her time to learning and growing in the field of science and technology. The award recipient should have been involved in community service as well as directly involved in extracurricular math, science or technology activities and be planning on majoring in a science- related field in college. Avon Robotics is a non-profit organization encompassing the ÜberBots and multiple LEGO leagues in the town and is open to any student that is an Avon resident. Its mission is to promote teamwork, professionalism and inspiration in the science and technology arena in students of all ages.
STANLEY BARNETT SCHOLARSHIP:
This scholarship is to be awarded to a Avon High School graduate with a GPA of 2.5 or higher seeking a college education in a law enforcement related field with priorty given to the descendant of a law enforcement officer/official.
CARMON FUNERAL HOME OF AVON SCHOLARSHIP:
The Carmon Family gives this scholarship to a graduating student who is pursuing a career in a care giving profession based on academic excellence and community service.
DUBIEL FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP:
Rick Dubiel, an Avon High School graduate, Class of 1973, and a past member of the Board of Directors of Avon Dollars for Scholars established this scholarship. It shall be for a student who will be pursuing a degree in engineering or education or one who has been accepted to Trinity College.
ENSIGN-BICKFORD REALTY CORPORATION:
A long standing supporter of Dollars for Scholars and the individual recipients in their pursuit of higher education. This scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a degree in engineering or science.
FARMINGTON SAVINGS BANK SCHOLARSHIP:
Farmington Savings Bank not only contributes a yearly scholarship but also supports one of their Branch Managers to serve in the position of Avon Dollars for Scholars Treasurer. Farmington Savings Bank continues to demonstrate their outstanding commitment to the community.
RALPH AND ELLEN GOBELL FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP:
The Gobell family is grateful to live in a town as nice as Avon. Ralph and Ellen’s children, Lauren and Brenden, attended Avon schools from kindergarten through High School, as did Ellen. This scholarship is just one way for them to give back to their community. It recognizes a student who has been very active in community service and has excelled in academic achievement.
LEN & CARYL GOLDBERG SCHOLARSHIP:
This scholarship recognizes an individual pursuing a career in education.
CHRISTINE PAPPALARDO GREIF SCHOLARSHIP:
This scholarship honors Christine Greif, Class of 1987, who has overcome tremendous odds since sustaining a traumatic brain injury caused by a drunk driver. She was a scholar athlete and recognized for her community service work at Avon High School. She majored in English at Dickinson College. Since her injury, even though she has limited use of only one hand, she draws and creates note cards from her artwork. She has donated two works of art to Avon Dollars for Scholars for note cards, including “Climb the Tree of Knowledge and Follow Your Dreams” and new this year, “Education Lights the Way”.
HAHN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP:
This award has been established by Steven and Gwendolyn Hahn, members of the Board of Directors of Avon Dollars for Scholars. The Hahn family believes very strongly in giving back. With the cost of higher education it is their desire to help out where possible. This scholarship is for a student who has demonstrated a high level of dedication to the community through charitable activity and service as well as an exceptional level of academic effort.
JACOBSON FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP:
This scholarship was established by Barry Jacobson, a member of the Board of Directors of Avon Dollars for Scholars and his wife, Mari. It recognizes a student with strong academic achievement and a passion for the arts or athletics.
KARAMPELAS FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP:
Basil Karampelas was valedictorian of the Class of 1983. Although he, his parents and brother lived in Avon for only a few years, he has always been grateful for the support AHS provided him in the form of AP test vouchers and college application fee waivers. This allowed him to apply to more schools than he would have otherwise, and his AP test results provided him with a significant amount of college credit at Stanford. Now an established investment fund advisor, he hopes to do the same for others by giving a scholarship honoring his family. The recipient of this award must demonstrate both excellent academic achievement and strong character.
RALPH ROSENBERG, M.D. & SUSAN LEVINE, M.D. AWARD FOR CARING:
Drs. Rosenberg and Levine are residents of Avon and have medical practices in town. This award goes to an individual who has distinguished her/himself by helping those less fortunate.
